Most often, the task of potty training is taken up by Mom, especially if she does not work outside the home. However, in certain circumstances it may be necessary for Mother to “draft” someone else to complete the job.
Often time it is Dad who steps up to the plate to show Johnny how to swing that bat! Dad can bring a Pride Factor to the day. Dad’s approval can be powerful motivation. I have watched my husband persuade my toddler to attempt something new and “scary” and been amazed!
If Mom has attempted training and it went bad or became a stand off to rival the O.K. Coral, then you may consider asking a friend or family member to take the reins! Ask them to read Potty Training in One Day Book and use the companion Potty Training in One Day A DVD. At the end of training, pour out your gratitude and be at their beckon call for the rest of your life! Or…..buy them a gift card!
It can be helpful for moms to enlist some help for the “Big Day”….like a tag team. Your child may put extra effort into pleasing those influential adults or totally cool teenagers in his life. Just be careful not to turn the day into a gab session. Stay focused on your child and communicate this priority to your help.
Older siblings can be cheerleaders for your toddler. They can praise, give “High Fives” and do the “Potty Celebration Dance”! Big Sis or Bro can read a book while Toddler is sitting quietly on the potty, giving you a much needed break!
You have options when it comes to having other people around during your training day. But even if Mom goes it alone, she will still include some special people on that “Big Day”: you may need to find a reliable care giver for siblings; you may need a co-worker to pick up some of your work if you stretch out a potty intensive weekend; and there are the “Heroes” your child will be calling to make their "Big Announcement". Be sure to include them in your success and give them a big thanks. Whoever is involved with the potty training day, it will be a special day to celebrate a new life milestone, so have fun!
